The Unfinished Obelisk at Aswan on the east
bank of the Nile in upper Egypt provides an opportunity to study the various stage of
quarrying granite for the production of obelisks.
The Unfinished Obelisk still lies in the quarry, detached on all but its lower side.
If it had been completed, it would have been one of the heaviest obelisk built by
the ancient Egyptians. It is said that the cutting had to be stopped due to the flaw
on the surface of the obelisk.
It is yet to be proved whether Queen Hatshepsut ordered the production of the obelisk or
it was to be erected as a companion to the Lateran
Obelisk for King Tuthmosis III.
