Location: Karnak, Egypt  Height: 19.5 meters  Weight: 143 tons   Red granite

One of a pair of obelisks Tuthmosis I erected still stands in front of the Third Pylon at the Great Temple of Amun-Re at Karnak, though it now leans a little. Although the other was standing as late as the eighteenth century, now we can only see its base remains.

Tuthmosis I was the first pharaoh who erected obelisks at the temple in Thebes, the capital of the New Kingdom. During the New Kingdom period (1567?-1085 B.C.), Ancient Egypt was at the zenith of its power and pharaohs were able to expand their realm beyond Egypt.
