The obelisk now stands at the Piazza del Quirinale used
to form a pair with the obelisk that now stands at Piazza dell'Esquilino. In
1781, it was unearthed from the ruins of the Mausoleum of Augustus.
In 1786, Pope Pius VI reerected the obelisk between a pair of statues known as the "
horse tamers" in the Piazza del Quirinale. The Quirinale Place, built in the
later half of the 16th century, was used as Pope's summer residence and is now used for
the official residence of the president of Italy. There is no inscription.
