The Rosetta Stone was one of the keys that made it possible to decode the meaning of hieroglyphs. In July 1799, General Napoleon Bonaparte's expedition to Egypt discovered the stone in a village to the West of the Nile River. On the stone the law issued on March 27, 196 BC by Ptolemy V to commemorate his enthronement is inscribed in three languages: hieroglyphs, demotic script and classical Greek. Knowing Greek, the Europeans were able to decrypt the hieroglyphs.
