In 1958, it was moved from Tanis to the small garden in Zamalek on the Ghezira Island in Cairo.   It was the only obelisk of the Ancient Egypt in Cairo.  The obelisk was originally built in the temple in the capital "Per Ramesses" established by Ramesses II during the Ninteenth Dynasty.
