Location: Viale Del Obelisco, Monte Pincio, Rome, Italy
Height: 9.25 meters Weight: unknown Red granite
The obelisk now stands in the Viale del Obelisco on
Monte Pincio.
In the second century AD, Emperor Hadrian erected the obelisk in a mortuary temple in Rome
to commemorate the sudden death of Antinous, the emperor's friend and companion. The
obelisk was extracted from Egypt without decorations. When it was relocated to Rome,
Hadrian had the inscription in memory of Antinous carved on the obelisk.
In the third century AD, the obelisk was removed to the Circus Varianus to decorate the
spina.
Then it was set up in the Vatican in the 18th century by Pope Clement XIV. Finally
in 1822, the obelisk was removed to its present site in the Viale del Obelisco on Monte
Pincio on orders from Pope Pius VII.
