The obelisk in the Piazza di San Pietro was
originally erected by the Roman Emperor Augustus in the Julian forum in Alexandria. The
Emperor Caligula ordered it moved to the Vatican Circus in A.D. 37. It was then removed to
thesquare in front of the Basilica of St. Peter. In 1586, Sixtus V had theobelisk
relocated to the present location.The obelisk is uninscribed. Therefore it is not known
when and where it was built.
