Location: Palazzo Pitti, Florence, Italy Height: 4.87 meters Weight: 4.5 tons Red granite The obelisk in the Boboli Gardens in Florence was erected by Ramesses II (1279 B.C. -1231 B.C.) in the temple of the Sun God in Heliopolis around1250 B.C.. The Boboli Obelisk forms a pair with the Terme Obelisk in Rome. Sometime in the 17th century, it was reerected in the Roman villa of the Medici, and in 1790 it was removed to the Boboli Gardens in the Pitti Palace. The gardens, which are typical Italian gardens were designed and planted in the1550s. In the center of the open air theater in the gardens, you can see the obelisk and a bathtub removed from Terme di Caracalla or Bath of Caracalla in Rome. During the summer, operas are shown in the theater. I am especially happy to be able to introduce these photos to the viewers of this homepage for the first time. I first visited the gardens in May 1991, but had to give up taking a photo of the Boboli Obelisk due to a heavy rain. Therefore, my photo book, "Obelisk", published in 1993, has no photo of this obelisk. In April 1996, I revisited the place and the weather was perfect to take photographs. Needless to say, these are some of my important pictures with unforgettable memories.
