The obelisk in the Viale delle Terme di Diocleziano was erected by Ramesses II in the temple of the Sun God in Heliopolis around 1300 B.C.. The Terme Obelisk forms a pair with the Boboli Obelisk in Florence.

It was discovered in 1883 at the ruin of Iseum in Rome. In 1887, it was reerected in front of the Termine railway station as a memorial to the casualties of a war with Ethiopia which broke out in 1885. In 1924, the obelisk was moved to a garden, south of the Viale della Terme where it still stands today.
