In 6th century B.C., Psammetikos II, the third pharaoh of the Twenty-Sixth dynasty,
erected one pair of obelisks in Heliopolis. Now one of the pair stands at Monte
Citorio in Rome.
Emperor Augustus removed the obelisk from Heliopolis and it reached the Campus Martius in
Rome in 10 B.C..
In 1748, Pope Benedict XIV initiated re-erection of the obelisk in front of the Monte
Citorio palace and Pope Pius VI completed the re-erection in 1792.
It is said to be a giant sundial. A Latin inscription was added to the obelisk upon
its re-erection.
